Training

2016 Opener Post

6th February 2016

*Trigger Warning: interspersed images of snow *

Update! It’s been a little while but now that I’ve finished the first semester of grade 12 and am into the second one, I have more time to write. I’ll post pictures too, it’s definitely winter here in NS and that means I’ve done a fair amount of snow rides, or rides with snow in the background. But first, here’s the plan for 2016:

photo creds to Haley Smith near Lawrencetown Beach. This was an incredible ride with her and Lespy.

I won’t be able to make the Canada Cup at Bear Mountain in Victoria, (or the training camp) for several reasons, so my first Canada Cup will be Mont Tremblant – where I started CC racing last year. Then in early June is the massive road trip for the two Ontario CC’s.   In July I’ll be heading to Québec for the double weekend- CC and Nationals which is also very exciting. First year U23 will be tough but I’m up for the challenge, so of course the main goal this year will be looking for UCI points so I can make it to a World Cup, hopefully Mont Sainte Anne. MSA is an incredible course, having ridden the World Cup course lasts summer at a National Team training camp.

My club has re-arranged it’s racing team a little – we have retired the Cyclesmith Junior Racing Team name in favour of the all-encompassing  and more inclusive Cyclesmith Racing. The new kit is stunning and I’ll be posting up pix as soon as it arrives. I’m proud to have been one of the original CJRT members; it has certainly allowed me to grow as an athlete and has taught me what a cycling club can do when we put our minds to it.

say, something like this which was obviously a very slow gruelling ride

With a new Trek Superfly getting built up now, pair of sick Oakley’s and support from everyone else including my teammates from Cyclesmith Racing- I’m ready to get the second half of winter training going. With my coaches, CSCA, my parents and friends, all supporting me, I know it’s going to be a big year and I can’t wait to start racing 🙂

Now, this is what happens behind the scenes- training, riding, hiking, snowshoeing, snow snow and more snow! I even tried skate skiing for the first time since 2010.  It’s harder than I remember it, but also as fun. There have been a few rough rides with the weather and temperature, but I always pack good food and most of the time it’s a blast. After all, what’s better to wipe out in than snow?

Doing a some lifting with my Cyclesmith Racing teammates. I hadn’t done lifting before this fall and I find I’m really enjoying it. (gymnastics was mostly body weight exercises)

Great day doing fitness testing with CSCA at the Canada Games centre. I also had a great chat about mental performance and am looking forward to doing more of those.

I am an aspiring athlete looking to make my mark on the mountain biking world. I love racing and training with my teammates, and I am looking for new ways to be faster and stronger- the fun is always in a good race!
