Joining Canada’s Elite

29th May 2016

Tremblant, QC

My first Canada Cup in the Elite category was something I was really excited about. This is the next step and this was where I’m going to have a real challenge on my hands. I raced at Tremblant last year as a junior and really enjoyed the course. The long start climb really compliments my ability where I make the most time going up. The descents are a blast too, technical but VERY flowy.

I wont say Rocky Mountain Chocolate Shop wasnt a motivator...we stopped by after dinner on race day. #fudgefordays

The week before I wasn’t feeling great health wise, especially after a week off thanks to a quad re-injury. I was excited, but became increasingly nervous on the days leading up to the race. This caused sleep and stomach problems, but I was determined to stand on the line next to my new competitors.

The race itself was brilliant. A few big guns were away at Albstadt so I imagine it was a softer start than it would have otherwise been, however, it was still a fast pace and I was so happy to be able to keep up! I held onto the top 10 for half of the race before I blew up, but I’m very happy with how that half went. All I need now is to keep the leg speed up for the rest of the race, and that’s what I’m planning on doing in the next two Canada Cups. I’m heading up to Ontario on Wednesday for Horseshoe and Hardwood Hills. Luckily I’ll have lots of time to preride Hardwood this time and it’ll be a completely different experience than the last time I went for National’s where I ended up at the hospital for stitches :/ I’m looking forward to testing the Superfly on this course- I’m really happy with its performance so far.

Alongside the racecourse, Tremblant Resort in general is one of my favourite venues. It feels like a real vacation! It’s beautiful and always feels so peaceful- a very nice environment to be competing in- gives everything a nice balance. My parents definitely enjoyed it too!

All of the well wishes and support from back home made the race fun and enjoyable- knowing everyone was behind me bolstered my energy. Thank you to everyone who made it possible, my sponsors: BNS, Cyclesmith and Cyclesmith Racing Team, Bontrager and The Saint John Jeux Canada Games Foundation. Last but definitely not least, Dad who does everything from coach to mechanic to chef and photographer.. Thank you for doing almost all of the driving!

I am an aspiring athlete looking to make my mark on the mountain biking world. I love racing and training with my teammates, and I am looking for new ways to be faster and stronger- the fun is always in a good race!
